Indications/Uses
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & adolescents >14 yr Initially 15-45 mL daily. Maintenance dose: 15-30 mL daily. Childn 7-14 yr Initially 15 mL daily. Maintenance dose: 15 mL daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ galactosaemia. Acute inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease), GI obstruction or subocclussive syndromes, digestive perforation or risk of digestive perforation, painful abdominal syndromes of undetermined cause.
Special Precautions
Galactose or fructose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Lactose intolerant patients. Patients w/ DM. Reduced dose or discontinue treatment if symptoms like meteorism or bloating occur in patients w/ gastro-cardiac syndrome (Roemheld syndrome) after intake. Can lead to diarrhea & electrolyte imbalance in chronic use. Drink sufficient amounts of fluids during therapy. Infants & small childn w/ autosomal recessive hereditary fructose intolerance. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Flatulence, abdominal pain. Nausea & vomiting; diarrhea (high dose; sometimes including electrolyte imbalance).
Drug Interactions
May increase K loss w/ thiazides, steroids & amphotericin B. Can increase effect of cardiac glycosides. Decreased pH value in the colon can inactivate 5-ASA.
